One night in Nyerere, Africa's biggest national park: a boat safari on the Rufiji River with hippos and crocodiles, a game drive among the lakes, and a camp where you fall asleep to the river.
Nyerere (the old Selous) is big, quiet and wet in all the right places. The Rufiji River cuts through it, which means you can do something most safaris cannot: watch elephants from a small boat while hippos surface a few metres away.
You fly in from Zanzibar in the morning, take a game drive along the lakes and spend the afternoon on the water. Dinner is around the fire at a tented camp. The next morning brings one more drive before the flight back to the beach.
Highlights
Day-by-day itinerary
-
Day 1Fly to Nyerere, game drive and boat safari
Morning flight from Zanzibar to an airstrip in Nyerere National Park. Your guide drives you to camp with a game drive on the way. After lunch, step onto a small boat on the Rufiji River for hippos, crocodiles, elephants drinking at the bank and a long list of birds. Back to camp for sundowners and dinner by the fire.
-
Day 2Morning game drive and fly back to Zanzibar
An early drive is the best time for lions and, if you are lucky, wild dogs. Brunch at camp, then the flight back to Zanzibar and a transfer to your hotel.
