Overview

The quieter, drier northern approach, with views of Kibo and Mawenzi and an acclimatisation hike to Mawenzi Tarn before the summit.

The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the north and is quieter, drier and less crowded than the southern routes. The 7-day plan is built for gradual acclimatisation using the ‘climb high, sleep low’ principle, through savannah-like zones, moorland and alpine desert, with views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks.

Best time to climb

  • January to March: warmer temperatures, fewer crowds and excellent visibility.
  • June to October: cool, dry weather with clear skies — great for trekking and photography.
  • Avoid April–May and November: rain, muddy trails and reduced visibility.

Temperatures at altitude can drop below freezing, especially on summit night, so layering is essential.
