Overview

The hardest route on the mountain: short, steep and spectacular, joining the Southern Circuit near Barranco. Best for experienced, well-prepared trekkers.

Umbwe is one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach, and the hardest route on Kilimanjaro. It is non-technical, but includes steep ascents, scrambling over rocks and tree roots, and exposed ridges. Because of the fast ascent profile its success rate is lower than other routes, so it is best for experienced, well-prepared trekkers.

The scenery is spectacular, especially in the first days, and the trail stays quiet until it joins the Machame Route near Barranco Camp. It continues on the Southern Circuit below the Southern Ice Field, summits via Barafu Camp and descends by the Mweka Route.
