Overview

One of the most popular and rewarding routes, with a 'climb high, sleep low' profile through rainforest, moorland and alpine desert to Uhuru Peak.

Climb Mount Kilimanjaro by the Machame Route, one of the most popular and rewarding routes on the mountain. The ‘climb high, sleep low’ schedule improves your chance of reaching Uhuru Peak, passing through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and the glacial summit zone. Experienced guides lead the way, supported by porters and cooks.

The route suits adventurous, physically fit climbers: it is more demanding than some others because of steeper trails and longer trekking days — and it rewards you with great scenery, a strong acclimatisation profile and a high summit success rate.

Best time to climb

  • January to March: warmer temperatures, fewer crowds and excellent visibility.
  • June to October: cool, dry weather with clear skies — great for trekking and photography.
  • Avoid April–May and November: rain, muddy trails and reduced visibility.

Temperatures at altitude can drop below freezing, especially on summit night, so layering is essential.
