Dry seasons, rain, wind and tides: what each month on Zanzibar is really like, and how to choose yours.
There is no bad month on Zanzibar, but there are months that suit different trips. Here is how the year works.
June to October: dry and fresh
This is the long dry season. Days are sunny, nights are cooler, and the trade winds blow steadily — good news for kitesurfers at Paje. It is also the best time for a safari on the mainland, because the animals gather near water. Book early for July and August.
November: the short rains
Showers come and go, usually in the afternoon. The island turns green and prices start to drop. Most days still have plenty of sun.
December to February: hot and clear
Sea at its calmest, water at its clearest. This is the best time for snorkelling at Mnemba and for dolphins at Kizimkazi. Christmas and New Year are very busy.
March: hot and still
The heat builds before the rains. It is a good month for quiet beaches and lower prices.
April and May: the long rains
Heavy rain is common and some places close. If you come now, you will have the island almost to yourself — and the best deals of the year.
Our advice
Choose the month for the trip you want: safari and kitesurfing from June to October, the sea from December to February, and value in the green months. Then tell us your dates and we plan the rest.
