Tarangire is known for its large, uniquely shaped baobab trees and for one of the largest concentrations of elephants in the world, with herds of up to 300 around the Tarangire River. It is a hidden treasure in the heart of East Africa — and the time you visit shapes your safari.
Little rain means water sources shrink and wildlife gathers around the Tarangire River: elephants, zebras, wildebeest and other grazers come to the banks, followed by lions, leopards and cheetahs. Migratory birds arrive from Europe and Asia. Expect sunny days, cool evenings and golden grass. This is the high season, so book accommodation early.
A lush green landscape with wildflowers, many baby animals, fewer visitors and possibly lower prices, with plenty of resident birds. Expect occasional showers.
Choose June to October for wildlife and comfortable weather, or November to May for a calmer trip, scenery and birds. Tarangire is worth visiting in every season.
Animals concentrate at the river; sunny days and cool evenings; high season.
Green landscapes, newborn animals, fewer visitors and great birding.
