Markets in the morning, history at midday, the sea at sunset and street food at night — a day in the old town, hour by hour.
Stone Town is small enough to walk and complex enough to get lost in. Here is a day that works.
Morning: Darajani market
Go early, when the fish and spice sellers are busiest. Then walk into the old town through the narrow streets.
Midday: history
Visit the former slave market memorial and the cathedral built on the site. It is a moving visit and an important one.
Afternoon: doors and rooftops
Look for the carved doors — Indian-style ones with brass studs and Arab-style ones with square frames. Stop for a coffee on a rooftop.
Sunset: on the water
Board a dhow on the town beach and watch the sun go down over the sea.
Evening: Forodhani
The food market in Forodhani Gardens opens as the light fades. Try the Zanzibar pizza and fresh sugar-cane juice.
