You can see lions and elephants and still be back on the beach for dinner. Here are the ways to do it, and what each one costs in time and money.
Many people think a safari means flying to Arusha and driving for days. From Zanzibar, it does not.
Fly in: fastest
Light aircraft leave Zanzibar every day for the southern parks. Mikumi and Nyerere are about an hour away, so even a one-day safari works. The Serengeti takes longer, with a stop on the way, and needs at least two nights to be worth it.
Flying costs more, and luggage is limited to a soft bag of around 15 kg. In return you get more time with the animals and a view of the coast from the air.
Ferry and train: the adventure
Take the fast ferry to Dar es Salaam and Tanzania’s new electric train to Morogoro, then drive into Mikumi. It is cheaper and you see the country from the ground. You need two days.
Which park?
Choose Nyerere for boat and walking safaris and a wild, quiet feel. Choose Mikumi for open plains and an easy short trip. Choose the Serengeti for the big cats and the Great Migration.
